This blog follows my adventures in BookCrossing--the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise. It is a fascinating exercise in fate, karma, or whatever you want to call the chain of events that can occur between two or more lives and one piece of literature.

Wild Releases #905 & #906
It was one year ago today that Portuguese BookCrosser Snowshoee passed away while waiting for a heart transplant. Although I didn't know her in person, I did follow her progress on the forums and grieved when I learned she lost her battle. As part of the worldwide mass release in her memory, I went to Twin Lakes in Greensburg and left "The Supernaturalist," by Eoin Colfer, on the path down to the upper lake, and "The Diary of a Young Girl," by Anne Frank, on a swing by one of the pavilions near the playground. Please consider becoming an
organ donor. I'm one.

Catch #127!
"Mariner's Compass" has navigated its way to a new reader! An AnonymousFinder reports, "Got this for a birthday present. Was found at Long John Silvers in
Latrobe, PA." Happy Birthday, and Happy Reading!

Wild Releases #899 - #902
After I finished setting up for Daffodil Days sales in Ligonier, Pa., this morning, I headed into town to do some BookCrossing. I left "A Night at the Operation," by Jeffrey Cohen, at the Ligonier Theater on West Main Street; "Court of Honor," by William P. Wood, at the District Judge's office on West Main Street; and "The Walker in Shadows," by Barbara Michaels, on the steps of the gazebo in the center of town. On my way home, I stopped for gas at GetGo on Route 30 and left "Lucifer's Hammer," by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, on top of one of the gas pumps.

Wild Release #898 & Catch #126!
On my way back from selling daffodils for the American Cancer Society in Ligonier, I stopped at Long John Silver's in Latrobe so I could release a book. I left "Mariner's Compass," by Earlene Fowler, on a ledge outside the entrance.
When I got home and checked my e-mail, I had a journal alert for "Servant of the Bones!" An AnonymousFinder reports they found it outside the entrance to Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Art on a beautiful pre-spring day. Congrats and thanks for journalling, AF!

Wild Releases #895 - #897
Another fun day today! I took Nieces Nos. 2 and 6 to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, where they were having free admission night, to meet Sister No. 4, Brother-in-Law No. 3, and Nephews Nos. 2 and 3. After we all finally found each other, I managed to release some books as we toured. I left Anne Rice's "Servant of the Bones" on a wall outside the museum, "The Bones & Skeleton Book," by Stephen Cumbaa and Kim La Fave, on a ledge where you could see actual scientists in a glass-walled room cleaning actual bones; and "Bugs and Slugs," by Judy Tatchell, on a bench in the dinosaur exhibit.

Wild Releases #891 - #894
After a morning spent volunteering for the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days campaign, I was lucky enough to spend a wonderful afternoon at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium with Brother No. 1, Sister-in-Law No. 1, Sister No. 5, and Nieces Nos. 6, 7, and 8! Of course, I had to leave some books while I was there. I left "Best Cat Stories," by Beryl Reid, on a bench by the tiger exhibit; "The Lions of Lucerne," by Brad Thor, by the lion exhibit; "An American Childhood," by Annie Dillard, on a lightpost heading into Kids' Kingdom; and "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day," by Judith Viorst, on a rock on the path leading out of the zoo. I'm sure some very tired and cranky children will pass that way (I think I was with a couple of them!).

Catch #125!
Looks like "Fatal Flip," didn't need a fancy themed release to get caught! An AnonymousFinder reports, "I found the book at Get-Go 230 Bessemer Rd, Mount Pleasant, PA 15666 Book was sitting on top of a gas pump. I was pumping my gas and the yellow "I'm Free! I'm Not Lost" caught my eye. I thought this was a really great idea so I brought the book home with me. I will leave it for someone to find when I am done with it." Thanks for the journal entry, AF! Enjoy!
Wild Releases #887 & #888
Mount Pleasant, Pa., was my shopping destination today partly because I had the perfect book to leave at Kmart, home of the Blue Light Special: Walter Mosley's "Blue Light." I left it on a ledge outside the main doors.
My second release was not so-well-themed. In fact, it was not themed at all. I left "Fatal Flip," by Peg Marberg, on top of a gas pump at the GetGo in Mount Pleasant. You just can't theme them all!

RABCKs #280 - #283
Mom is hosting this month's book club meeting this morning, so I offered to provide party favors: "The Magician's Assistant," by Ann Patchett; "With No One As Witness," by Elizabeth George; "Come to Grief," by Dick Francis; and "Candy Apple Red," by Nancy Bush. Enjoy!

Wild Release #882
I saw a high school musical today (Grease, at Greensburg Salem) and I had grand plans of leaving this book at the high school before the play started, but I arrived later than I expected and my plans never got off the ground. I thought I'd leave it in the parking lot as we were leaving—someone would be sure to pick it up on the way to their car—but that didn't quite pan out, either, since we were some of the last people to leave. I finally ended up leaving it at The Meadows Original Frozen Custard in Greensburg, justifying it as a themed release because it's decorated in the style of a 1950s diner, and "Grease" takes place in the 1950s!

Wild Release #881 & Catch #123!
"A Certain Justice," by P.D. James, has had a busy couple of hours! I released it at the GetGo in Latrobe, Pa., leaving it on top of a gas pump shortly before 6 p.m., and a couple of hours later I received a journal alert that it had been caught. I love when that happens! Thank you, darwwin2008, for making my day. Welcome to BookCrossing!

Wild Release #879
I remembered having a delightful meal at Applebee's in Mount Pleasant, Pa., the last time I was there, so I decided to repeat the experience and wild release a book at the same time. I left Sidney Sheldon's "Memories of Midnight" on a bench outside the main doors when I was done with tonight's delightful meal.

Wild Release #877
February was a very snowy month here in southwestern Pennsylvania, so I was very glad to turn the calendar page to March today. To celebrate the new month which takes us closer to the end of winter, I released "Blessing in Disguise," by Eileen Goudge, on the window ledge outside America's Best Contacts & Eyeglasses in Greensburg. Whether the wintry weather is a blessing in disguise is yet to be determined!
